Do you know when to stop for a school bus in Georgia? Knowing this law is VERY important because it keeps our kiddos safe when they get on and off their bus.
If you stop and think about when you have to stop for a school bus and when you don’t, it can be kind of confusing. It can be even more confusing when different states have different laws.
Let’s clear it up so your confusion does not turn into a ticket!
When a school bus has the red lights flashing and the stop arm extended, all drivers are required to stop when coming up behind the bus or approaching it from the other direction.
There’s only one exception to this rule- if the highway has a median made of grass, dirt, or concrete, only the cars behind the bus have to stop.
So what do the yellow lights mean?
Bus drivers turn the yellow lights on when they are about to stop to load/unload passengers. When you approach a bus with flashing yellow lights, you should slow down and get ready to stop. Once the bus stops, the red lights will come on.
